A Short Message Regarding Reading Materials
AP students will be reading a wide array of fiction and nonfiction. These titles are College Board approved with a serious likelihood of appearing on the AP exam in some way. This is a class for which college credit is potentially earned so some titles possess greater maturity in content. A few materials contain topics and content of a sensitive nature. In no way is Paradise Honors High School endorsing these ideas and concepts. A very small number of the novels and short stories depict violent struggles and situations, such as murder, rape and suicide. Culturally insensitive labels and racially inappropriate expressions also appear. A small number of stories contain the use of mild language. These instances are few and far between. Greetings and salutations. The Pre-AP program is a challenging and rigorous course, but it is completely navigable. With strong discipline and proper planning, success can be achieved. I believe in you. That's why you are here.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it (which you must), is to read this fine work of literature. The book is accompanied by some pages to be completed along with the reading. Also, an essay will be written upon the return to school for the title so a thorough reading will be necessary. "Shmooping" will not serve one well. Not now. Not on the AP exam. Not only will it be unhelpful, it is an action in poor faith for an AP student. The opportunity to use this novel as a resource could appear on the AP exam. Having the book in one's toolbox will be a must.
This title will be recommended reading over the summer. Book covers of potential purchases do not need to be identical to the one below; translations will be the same. Buying a used copy is highly recommended.
Along with this reading, students are required to complete a ReHUGO which can be accessed by selecting the button below. Directions are self-explanatory. Some details of note--all work should be pleasant in appearance, work should not be crammed onto the worksheets, writing must be legible, and paper cannot be folded. This is a college prep class so work should be treated as such. Failure to meet these expectations will require that the assignments be resubmitted. The teacher reserves the right to determine when work is unacceptable.
Finally, hard copies of all assignments are required. Do not email assignments. Do not arrive to class and ask to go to the computer lab so that your assignment can be printed. Take care of business before taking care of business.
Students will also be required to complete a "Shmoopification" endeavor for the book. All directions are available on the file below.
Best of luck! This will be a very rewarding experience. Hard work is required, but the feeling of satisfaction is very fulfilling. You can do it!
